Marine Port Lights Application Characteristics

The main feature of the marine port lights is that it emits red light. According to regulations, the port light is installed on the left side of the ship and is used together with the green light on the starboard side to indicate the direction of the ship’s navigation.

This red light is displayed within a range of 22.5 degrees from the front of the ship to the rear of the port side, and it emits 112.5° when viewed from the left side.

Ensure that other ships can clearly identify the navigation status and direction of the ship.

The sidelight is an important signal light in ship navigation, which helps to avoid collision accidents.

Application Characteristics of Marine Port Lights

The port light for ship is one of the important safety equipment in ship navigation, mainly used to display the heading and position of the ship. Its application characteristics are as follows:

  • 1. Color & position

The marine port light is red and is installed on the left side of the ship (looking back from the bow, the luminous angle is 112.5°).

The boat port light is used together with the starboard light (green) and the tail light (white) to facilitate other ships to identify the direction of the ship’s navigation.

  • 2. Sight distance requirements

According to the regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the port lights must be clearly visible to the vessel within a certain sight distance, which is usually determined by the size and type of the vessel.

  • 3. Visibility

The LED port lights should provide sufficient brightness at night or in low visibility to ensure that other vessels can clearly identify their position and direction.

  • 4. Navigation safety

With the correct lighting configuration, the port lights can effectively prevent collisions, especially when sailing in busy waterways or at night, providing important visual signals.

  • 5. Light flashing frequency

Some regulations require the lights to use flashing or fixed light sources, which helps to enhance the identification convenience of other vessels.

  • 6. Maintenance & inspection

Its necessary to regularly check the working status and brightness of the marine port lights to ensure that they can be used normally when needed.
