Precise Layout and Reliable Practice of Helipad Lighting System in Extreme Environments.
The Jazan helipad project in Saudi Arabia is located on the Red Sea coast, on the edge of the desert. This region faces extreme climatic challenges year-round, including high temperatures, high humidity, and frequent sandstorms.
In such an environment, ordinary outdoor lighting equipment is prone to aging, corrosion, or failure, thus placing extremely stringent requirements on the reliability, protection level, and weather resistance of the helipad lighting systems.
Solution: ICAO-Compliant Helipad Lighting System
To ensure safe and accurate guidance even in extreme environments, our company provided this project with a complete high-end helipad lighting solution compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
We not only provided a full range of helipad lights, but also conducted a scientific layout design tailored to the specific environment of Jazan, covering:
- Boundary demarcation
- Site floodlighting
- Wind direction indication

Helipad Lighting System Layout
Four Types of Lights Working in Harmony
In this project, YFFY, based on ICAO specifications and the actual operational needs of helicopter takeoffs and landings, meticulously laid out the following four types of key helipad warning lights:
1. Boundary Lights: Defining Safe Landing Zones
Boundary lights are precisely installed at the four corners of the Final Approach and Takeoff Area (FATO) on the helipad.
These yellow or green constant-light fixtures:
- Clearly delineate safe landing boundaries
- Provide intuitive visual references at night
- Improve visibility in low-visibility conditions such as dust storms
This effectively prevents deviation from the landing zone.
2. Floodlights: Illuminating the Entire Work Area
To meet the lighting needs of:
- Nighttime maintenance
- Emergency rescue
- Routine takeoffs and landings
Heliport floodlights are strategically placed on high masts or towers around the helipad.
Features include:
- Wide-angle beam distribution
- Reduced cockpit glare
- Uniform, high-brightness ground illumination
They ensure clear visibility of:
- Helipad surface
- Obstacles
- Personnel activity areas
3. Wind Vane Lights: Real-Time Airflow Guidance
Strong wind vane lights, resistant to wind and corrosion, are installed in a prominent position on the side of the helipad.
Their built-in LED light emits white or orange light, enabling pilots to:
- Quickly determine wind direction
- Assess wind speed during approach
This provides a critical meteorological reference for safe hovering and landing.
These lights are made of UV-resistant materials, remaining clearly visible even under strong sunlight and sandstorm conditions.
4. Recessed Airport Lights: Ensuring Unobstructed Ground
Due to the close distance between helicopter rotors and the ground, any protrusion can pose a risk.
Therefore, recessed airport lights are used and installed flush with the helipad surface.
These LED lights are used to mark:
- Taxiway centerlines
- Aiming points
- Other guidance markers
Operational characteristics:
- When off: fully flush, no impact on movement
- When on: emit high-intensity light signals
They provide accurate guidance during nighttime or sandstorm operations.

Reliable Helipad Lighting System Design for Extreme Environments
All supplied lights are from our helipad lighting series and possess the following core characteristics:
- IP65 or higher protection rating
Completely dustproof and resistant to high-pressure water jets, suitable for high humidity and heavy rain along the Red Sea coast - High temperature and corrosion resistance
Aluminum alloy and stainless steel housing with special coating, suitable for environments from -40℃ to +55℃ and high salt spray conditions - ICAO standard certification
Luminosity, chromaticity, and electrical performance comply with Annex 14, Volume II and relevant national standards
Project Results and Customer Feedback
Currently, the Jizan helicopter helipad lighting system has passed full acceptance and is in operation.
In continuous monitoring over the past few months:
- No light decay observed
- No water ingress issues
- No circuit failures
Even after severe sandstorms, the light surfaces maintained good light transmittance.
The operator commented:
“This apron lighting system not only illuminates the apron, but also illuminates the confidence in every safe takeoff and landing.”
Project Value
The success of the Saudi Jizan project demonstrates our company’s one-stop delivery capabilities in the field of:
- High-end airport ground lighting
- Apron lighting systems
